چکیده
Introduction This paper discusses the education, employment and involvement in research of dental hygienists and aims to appraise the reader of developments in these areas. However, at the outset it must be recognised that the education and employment of dental hygienists is by no means universal. Before considering their growing involvement in research, it is therefore worthwhile to consider the rationale for their existence. This is based on a number of factors, including costeffectiveness, improving access to oral care for the population and quality of care for patients.
